For freeing up space on an already cramped dorm desk, nothing beats the Griffin Elevator. I'm a tried and true fan of it. Bonus: it packs into a bag pretty nicely so you can bring it to the computer lab with you. You will get called out, though.

You will not be allowed to use push pins, sticky tack, most kinds of tape, or nails in your dorm walls. You will, however, be allowed to use these sticky hooks, and they will save your life. Hang your keys on them, use them to hold up pictures, whatever other hanging-related-things you need to do. They're the bomb.

If you are that kid on the hall with the screwdriver, you will instantly make friends. They're cheap, usually forgotten, and insanely useful on move-in day.

Whether you're hungover or have the flu, your first aid kit is easy to pack and it's not something you want to have to track down once you're already sick. Buy one and keep it well stocked.
