HackCollege Xmas Lists: David

David Pierce Here's my list! It mostly focuses on caffeine ingestion and electronics, which I guess is why I write for HackCollege...
-
I want to be able to write stuff, surf the Web, and enjoy delicious tea...without standing up. That's the dream right there.
-
It costs, like, a dollar, and means I don't have to do the "one headphone for me, one for you" thing that's so annoying when I'm sharing music.
-
I'm not going to lie, I'm pretty good at Guitar Hero. And World Tour is my chance to hit the big time--drums, a mic, and the whole deal.
-
I flat-out cannot function without coffee in the morning. And the Keurig brewer means I can get one cup, quickly and easily, without having to deal with complicated machines or selling my soul to Starbucks.
-
I need a reason to run, and I think the Nike+ software might actually do it for me.
-
This one speaks for itself. It fits in my wallet, and opens bottles. I'd win at parties.
-
Mostly for taking video of said parties, that I've made infinitely more awesome with my Wallet Bottle Opener. It's cheap, easy, and fantastic.
-
This would be awesome for, like, 45 minutes, and then completely useless. But those would be 45 minutes of EPIC.

I would have that wallet opener in a couple of months with my site name on it, I will send you one David ;)
That'd be awesome! What a great idea for your site - I'm psyched to have one!
David,
I know the Keurig coffeemaker is nice, but you might want to consider the Hamilton Beach 3-in-1 Hot Beverage Center.
The Keurig definitely beats the HB in the style category: while the Keurig offers 3 colors of it's stylish brewer, the HB comes only in black, and it's not particularly pleasing to the eye. But honestly, the HB probably fits in with your college decor a little better than the Keurig, anyway
The major downside to the Keurig model is that you're required to use their "K-Cups," which are single-serving packages of coffee. This means that (1) you can't buy your coffee in bulk (which is a money-saver and therefore the most important aspect to a college student) and (2) you're out of luck if you run out of K-Cups. You might not be selling your soul to Starbucks, but you sure are selling it to Keurig. The individually-packaged option definitely makes for easy clean-up.
The advantage of the K-Cups is that they are less complicated than measuring coffee grounds - I'll give them that, but the HB brewer accommadtes coffee grounds, coffee pods (individually packaged coffee servings, similar to the K-Cups), tea bags or leaves, or just plain old hot water.
Another pitfall of the Keurig is it only has room for its own dainty little coffee cup. The HB allows for use of any hot-beverage-container - a handy travel mug, your favorite mug with the unicorns, whatever.
Ways you win by buying the Hamilton Beach 3-in-1:
1. Obviously, the HB model is less expensive than the Keurig model - $54.96 to be exact.
2. You'd spend way more on those K-Cups than straight up coffee - I'm going to give a rough estimate of somewhere around $1096.54 over the life of the device.
3. You wouldn't need to buy that electric tea kettle at all! You'd just brew up coffee and tea (or hot water if you prefer your tea steeped separately) all in the same appliance of magic brewing capabilities, saving you another $16.96.
Before you sip your first piping hot cup of Colombian brew or English Breakfast, you've saved
yourselfSanta a cool $71.92.To sum it all up, unless you've won a lifetime supply of K-Cups or you really want a red coffeemaker, the HB 3-in-1 could be your next lean, mean, brewing machine.
PS
My friend has the HB, and it's pretty much the greatest thing ever for a coffee lover.
HI,
Thanks for the awesome ideas for Xmas. you have made it easier the gift selection for me

Is Hack College all male? Not that gifts should be gendered as I think these gift lists are for anyone and I'm glad but just noticed there wasn't a female giving a list so I inferred that perhaps hack college doesn't have a female on it's staff...
Currently, we don't have any female writers. My name is the thing that comes closest :)
I'd buy one of those brewers, but it seems kind-of like a lose-lose. They're more expensive than a basic coffee maker, plus you're roped into only using those stupid little cups. Plus, I'm addicted to Dunkin' Donuts brand coffee, so they're a no-go for me.
Also, I got a Livescribe pen at the start of the fall semester, and I love the thing. It's great for my literature courses, since teachers tend to go way off topic, and it's impossible to type the damned lectures. I know they're not for everyone, but I adore my Livescribe. It's saved my ass on numerous occasions, too. Having a copy of notes on my computer makes life easier if I lose my notebook, say, the week before finals. Hypothetically. Because, you know, I'm totally not that disorganized... nope.
